Volcano latest: majority of UK flights restricted

Flight restrictions across the majority of the UK remain in place until 7pm Friday, April 16.

Air traffic control service Nats said flights from Northern Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland to and from Glasgow and Prestwick may be allowed to take off until during that period, depending on individual circumstances.

Some north Atlantic flights to and from Glasgow, Prestwick and Belfast may also be permitted during the same period.

However, all other restrictions across the rest of the UK are expected to remain in place.

Nats banned all commercial flights across the whole of the country this morning as a result of the cloud of volcanic ash.

A further statement is expected from Nats at 8.30am today detailing flight information until 1am tomorrow, although the service is not optimistic the situation will improve.
