Kerala engages UNESCO to rediscover ‘Spice Route’
28th Mar 2011
Along side the Muziris Heritage Project, which is currently underway around places which was part of ancient port city of Muziris, the Kerala government has launched another initiative to rediscover the popular ‘Spice Route’ concept with the help of UNESCO. As a first step, UNESCO along with Kerala government recently organised a meeting in New Delhi of the Ambassadors and Cultural Attache's of countries associated with the ancient Spice Route to explore the potential of redeveloping this route as part of a heritage trail. Kerala has identified almost 30 countries which had maritime relations with Kerala in the past. These include Afghanistan, Burma, China, Denmark, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mozambique, Netherlands, Oman, Portugal, Spain, etc.
Addressing the gathering Dr Thomas Issac, Finance Minister, Kerala said that government has started thinking beyond Muziris and that is what resulted in the concept of Spice Route. Heritage Tourism will get a big boost in the state through these initiatives.
