Devigarh

Nestled in the Aravalli hills, the 18th century Devi Garh palace in the village of Delwara, forms one of the three main passes into the valley of Udaipur.

Devigarh FortDevi Garh is ready for visitors after years of restoration and rebuilding. The Fort palace was conceived as a place where the past meets the future. This all suite luxury hotel comprising of 39 suites; they work on design and detail, using local marbles and semi-precious stones. The contemporary design showcased within this spectacular heritage property, complemented by personalized and intimate service, creates a new image of India for the 21st century.
One of India's few Boutique Hotels; Devigarh will come as a very pleasant surprise to anyone exploring Rajasthan. A stunning two hundred-year-old hilltop fort-palace has been beautifully restored and finished differently in a very contemporary style. The concept of putting an entirely modern interior design within a traditional palace is unique in Rajasthan and works to excellent effect.

Just north of Udaipur, in the heart of the countryside, the fort is a rambling building, with spacious gardens and superb views, overlooking the surrounding hills and village below. The huge suites are well spread out around the building, arranged on different levels and in separate parts and all twenty-three command spectacular views. They are exquisitely decorated, predominantly in white marble with individual colour themes reflecting the rich colours seen throughout Rajasthan and because Devigarh was not originally built as a hotel, each one is a different shape, size and design.

ACCOMMODATION

All of the 39 suites at Devi Garh are unique; luxurious and beautiful, yet equipped with the most modern facilities to make a guest feel utterly at home. The premium suite, called Devi Garh Suite, has a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi, of its own. Each suite is embellished with marble and semi-precious stones, while the public spaces are designed around different metals.

DEVIGARH SUITE

The Devi Garh and Palace Suites, which together form The Devi Garh Complex, share a common black marble swimming pool. The two bedrooms are available together or individually. The larger, Devi Garh Suite has its own private sun deck and Jacuzzi.

The concept behind the design philosophy of the Devi Garh Suite Complex is that of 'Shiv' and 'Shakti' - the respective male and female energies, embodied in Shiva, the Hindu God of destruction in conjunction with Shakti, his consort, who personifies the divine power of femininity.

An integral part of the concept is the image of the bull Nandi, the 'vahana' (vehicle) of Shiv and a devotee of the God.

ARAVALLI SUITE

The Aravali Suites are the most spacious, bright and tastefully designed suites at Devi Garh. They offer complete privacy and have a spectacular view of the Aravali hills, which can be enjoyed from balconies or large bay windows.
One of the Aravali Suites is a duplex spread over two levels; a loft-like space accommodates the bedroom and bathroom above, while the lower houses the dining and sitting areas.

The design of this particular suite is based on the traditional Indian motif - often considered the most beautiful in Indian art - that of the lotus, or kamal. Its likeness is repeated in the paintings in the room, as well as in the floor patterns throughout the suite. Furthermore, the suite overlooks the spectacular black marble 'kamal' court, a courtyard that again reflects the image of a lotus in bloom.

PALACE SUITE

The Palace Suites are each individually designed gems - literally, for the décor of each utilizes semi-precious stones in inlays. Pristine white marble forms an effective base to offset the rich and elegant colors of Rajasthan, with local art skills used in a modern manner. In every case, the patterns of the furniture are reflected and replicated in the white terrazzo forming the floor.

All the palace suites have either balconies or bay windows, which overlook the lush green fields and the mountains surrounding Devi Garh. Each suite is accessible through traditional 'aangans' (courtyards) transformed with contemporary design.

In every suite, the specially selected upholstery and furniture exhibit a view towards a refined beauty and functionality. Marble combined with semi-precious stones, such as malachite, mother of pearl, jasper and lapis lazuli, lend an aura of luxury and quiet elegance to the rooms.

GARDEN SUITE

The Garden Suites at Devi Garh each have their own private lobby, garden and tented terrace, and overlook a vivid rectangular field of flowers.

In each of the suites, the décor (based on local green marble) bring the serenity and beauty of the garden inside. A carved marble tree of life surmounts the headboard of the bed, emphasizing the illusion of a lush garden within the room.

THE SPA AT DEVIGARH

The deep penetrating heat of the stones combined with traditional massage strokes relieves tension and sore muscles.

LANDSCAPE & COURTYARDS

One of the most outstanding features of Devi Garh is its landscape design done in a modern and contemporary manner. Using traditional materials and motifs, contemporary designs have been created which embody the confluence between the old and the new. The raw materials used are all local, with white marble utilized extensively throughout the palace. The two 12 feet high standing blocks of uncut white marble at the entrance are symbolic representations of the stone in its purest form.

Devi Garh, much like any traditional dwelling, revolves around courtyards; five to be precise. Each courtyard blends classical and modern design to achieve a fusion, which is peaceful yet intriguing. The Kamal Court, is an interesting interpretation of the traditional lotus motif as a black marble water maze.

LOCAL SIGHTSEEING

A part of the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan, Devi Garh offers ample scope for sightseeing.

DELWARA
The village where Devi Garh is located boasts four 14th Century Jain temples, which formed the inspiration for the famous temples of Dilwara near Mount Abu - these exquisitely carved temples are well worth a visit. Founded in 1567 by Maharana Udai Singh on the bank of Lake Pichola, Udaipur is a city of palaces, gardens, and lakes. The Lake Palace and the beautiful City Palace, (part of which has been converted into a museum housing the largest collection of crystal in the world,) are just two of Udaipur's main attractions.
